I love Valentine's Day! I don't know, maybe because I'm a truly blessed woman and have three valentine's of my own at home to love and cherish... Yes, but also because I love the color PINK and I loooove hearts!! If you are a friend of mine, you know that I love the color pink, maybe just a little too much. Anyway, There is no holding back on the pink AND hearts when it is nearing Valentine's Day right?? This little 18-month-old cutie and her parents came to my NE Minneapolis Photo Studio this past weekend to capture this time in their life. Mom told me, "We want to capture her just doing her thing right now..." The life of an 18-month-old is constantly, go, go, GO! Yes, we did capture her on the go a lot. But I also am pretty sneaky in getting these little ones to take a moment's pause... and CLICK, we photographed a super cute look!

The "K" family was a referral from a previous client. I cannot tell you how much of a compliment it is to us at Joy Orcutt Photography, to receive a referral. Thank you "K" family for hanging out at my studio. We can't wait to photograph miss "A" again in the future!

I can't help but notice a trend in footwear making its way into a lot of our photo sessions this summer. Its Toms shoes! I've had several seniors bring them in, because they wanted their favorite shoes photographed. Well, I think they certainly love the idea behind Toms, buy a pair and Toms gives a pair to child in Ethiopia, who wouldn't agree with that.
We have even noticed it in our wedding photographer this summer too. A bride even wearing Toms shoes under her wedding gown! Totally comfortable and totally supporting children in need! I have a feeling we will only be seeing more of these shoes as the year goes on.

I met the "L" family last year to photograph their daughter. This time, they came to my studio again with a new addition, a newborn baby girl! This was their newborn session but we managed to work in a couple pics of the whole family together. Little baby "L" was wide awake when they first arrived so we had some fun with everybody. Also, "C" showed me how big she is to hold her newborn baby sister.

I love this... just being silly, I love the closeness in this family photo.

I had a fabulous time photographing this Class of 2011 senior for her senior photos. I knew she had great style, she was a senior rep for Joy Orcutt photography for Centennial High School, so I have photographed her before. But I didn't realize that over the course of this year she has focused and decided to major in Fashion Merchandising. So, right away I commented her on her totally cute dress and her mom, who happened to be with, said, "yes, isn't it cute, she designed and made it herself!" I thought, sure, maybe she picked out the fabric and the pattern... but... She actually, SEWED the dress herself! I was blown away, so impressed. Just not that many young people sew anymore. So, I had to take a closer look and inspect her work, I was just so impressed and excited for her! She's going to do great in the fashion design industry! Oh, this is one of her dresses in the photo below: (so cute right?)

Again, loved this outfit and pretty much everything that she brought to her senior photo session. She has great taste, definitely a bit of a bohemian flavor:

This lovely lady came in for her senior rep session. She has such a fresh, stunning look. Who would ever know that she had just come from track practice earlier that morning, are you kidding me?? :) Notice how the gold earrings really bring out the hazel color in her eyes? Good choice. So during our senior sessions we usually try a variety of looks, one of which, is the "serious" look, you will notice on the bottom right. But, whenever I first tell seniors to try the "serious" face, they immediately laugh, as exhibited by top right:

Baby boy newborn session! I have clients tell me often that they feel there is not much fun accessorizing to do with baby boys. Ha! So not true. We can have a ton of fun with baby boy newborn sessions. I always love a fun, crocheted hat. I have this stripey one in both grey & cream and in mauve & cream (for newborn girls).

If you read Joy Orcutt Photography blog a lot you'll see this green striped blanket (below) A LOT! I love it, I love stripes and they just photograph so well.

aww.... owls are all the rage lately!! Cute, Cute, Cute little baby "N" is in this little nest.

At Joy Orcutt Photography we are currently busy shooting senior rep sessions for the Class of 2012 Senior Portrait season. Our style is very non-traditional for senior portraits. Call it modern, call it fresh, different; it is anything and everything but traditional and typical.
A great example below, this lovely beauty. These shots are exactly what I wanted to capture of her, her loveliness. She had a bohemian look in what she wore and the way she would shrug her shoulders and just smile spoke millions about her personality. Whatever it was, I drew it out of her and this is the result, so lovely.

Whoa baby! The last couple of months has brought so many newborns to Joy Orcutt Photography!! It certainly is a sign of spring, newborn babies and newborn photo sessions. My studio is set up and ready to go, plenty of toasty heat (I love my portable heater and so do babies), plenty of blankets, fabrics, comfy pillows, plenty of cute hats, headbands, diaper covers, wraps... so many ways to keep the little ones cute and comfy. I also make sure that mom and dad are relaxed too, places to nurse and the ability to sit back and relax while I pose and create those first portraits that they can keep forever. I know when new parents think about their newborn photos, most think of those sleepy baby photos. They are pretty amazing, but I do love when newborns are awake for some photos too. Their eyes are so shiny and beautiful. If we're lucky, in a newborn session, we get a mixture of both sleeping baby and awake baby pictures.

This was such a fun family session to do. Mom and dad were wearing bright, spring colors. Oh, and of course, they brought along their too cute newly-turned one-year-old boy for some family photos. I love his appliqued personalized t-shirt. This is a great idea to really add a fun, personal touch to photos.

mom brought dad's tie and I couldn't resist letting him play with a vintage camera. How cute!

I just love doing this pose for a family session. I love how it shows just how little your little one is at this moment. They won't be this little for long!

and a new personal favorite here... I have found other photographers who have done something similar with the Cheerios, mommy brought in the box to dump in the bowl and let baby boy at it!

In addition to several other sessions this past weekend at my NE Minneapolis Studio, I happened to have two little kiddos that were just turning one! What a monumental time for a custom photo session. These two were so fun to photograph.

Oh, and look at their eyes!! Those cheeks and those eyes. They are definitely growing out of that baby stage... so big!

I love the one-year-old birthday photo session, I think it is such a big deal to parents, making it through that first year. Happy birthday little ones!

and she decided to snooze for awhile to, which was fine with me and her mom. That is the beauty of a custom Joy Orcutt Photography newborn session, lots of time to get aquainted, time for feedings, time for playing, time to not be stressed out about your session running out quickly and people waiting in line behind you... oh, and time for some photos!

No, you are not seeing double... this is a lovely set of twin girls, identical to be exact. And boy, are they IDENTICAL! I started photographing this family when the twins' older sister was a newborn!

Mom was soooooo smart to start bringing babies' initials with to their photo shoots!! This helped me big time with editing and keeping track of them, plus it is super cute!
Also, babies love to eat their letters!

Photographing twins is hard work! I guess BEING photographed is hard work too! Ha! I love how they are reaching out to eachother in times of distress!!

Of course, the session would not be complete without pics of big sissy, she was a big help and their family simply would not be complete without her!

Holiday card templates from Minneapolis Holiday mini sessions|Minneapolis Children's Photographer

Joy Orcutt Photography mini sessions this year were a hit! I only had one spot that did not fill which meant that Jason and I could sneak away for lunch together without kids!! I was a little nervous with the snow storm that hit that morning and continued on throughout the day. But that is why I love my clients, no cancellations! In fact, I think it added to our holiday mood!

The idea of holiday mini sessions is really to have a fun, light-hearted photo session, getting a couple fresh shots just in time for your holiday cards you will be mailing out.

We set up a gorgeous white flocked modern backdrop, I incorporated my all white vintage record cabinet which Jason found at a garage sale last summer. We also had glam elements to add in or out, based on clothing and colors, golds, silvers and blues.

I won't show photos from that day just yet. I want to make sure I'm not spoiling the shots that some clients will be using to design their boutique holiday cards which were included in our mini session. I do know that those lucky ones who receive these beautiful cards will gasp upon opening. They really are unlike typical photo cards, the paper is ultra thick, like that of a greeting card. Couple that with the latest contemporary holiday card designs printed by one of the top professional photography priting companies in the nation, you have some happy friends and relatives. That gives me some "warm fuzzies!"

There's something about taking photos right before the holiday time, getting that awesome shot of famililes just laughing and bonding, that I just love. It must be that getting holiday cards in the mail in the month of December is just about one of my favorite things!!

I took photos of these little girls at their home in June. I know their parents are going to really appreciate the photos we just took last weekend in the fall leaves. It is unbelievable how much they have grown in only 4 months!

I totally love their boots!! Must be the hottest trend in toddler attire as I am seeing a lot of boots on young little ladies this season!

Yay! We have started to head outdoors for fall family photo sessions! The rush is on now, to make the best of this short magical time which is fall. Jason and I will be photographing A LOT of families between now and the first snow fall. We absolutely love this time of year, its hard now to with the leaves turning colors and the promise of the holidays nearby. It is also a favorite time for us because we love connecting with clients who share the similar desire to preserve a little piece of their family history by having their photos taken. This photo is already one of my favorites from fall this year, there will be many more to come I'm sure.

Meet this lovely little family of four. Family photo sessions are definitely picking up now as everybody (believe it or not) is starting to think about fall, holidays approaching and that content feeling knowing that you have gotten your holiday cards, complete with beautiful family photo, finished and off in the mail.

They came to the studio for a Minneapolis family photo session. Mom had great ideas for coordinating outfits for the whole family. I do love those stripes!! And of course, having two little girls means a lot of pink, tulle and flowers! Our session left plenty of time for just having fun, getting some action photos and a lot of laughter. (This family giggles a lot) What lucky girls!

What I love most about having studio in the NE Minneapolis Arts District is that it is so versatile. A lot of seniors want an urban feel to their senior photos. I know when I was embarking on my senior year, I wasn't this sophisticated, and focused. I've had the pleasure to do many newborn sessions lately! Gotta love that! There is something so incredible about photographing newborns. It is even more incredible watching and listening to parents standing nearby as I am posing the little babies and the "ooohs and ahhs" that follow when they see everything come together.

I can't recommend enough, having a newborn session done. There is something so precious about those first two weeks with your new baby, your new family member. They change and grow so rapidly in those first weeks. It is awesome to be able to look back at how small they were, in great detail.

Wow, it's been so long since I have had a spare moment to blog... I almost forgot how to!
Over the 4th of July stretch I held mini sessions in Duluth. I filled every spot that I had intended so it was a great success. The sights of Duluth and its many picturesque backdrops would send any photographer into sensory overload. I decided to set up shot at the Rose Garden and Leif Erickson Park overlooking Lake Superior.

I love this shot of the superb stylist, so fun!

The lovely gazebo in the Rose Garden. Odds are, if you lived in Duluth, you had your wedding photos taken there. I had mine there!

Jason and I started off this engagement session at the NE Minneapolis studio. Its a good way to start off a session, get warmed up. We play some music, let the happy couple check their look, get a feel for things.

we moved to the outside of the studio... took a little walk around the NE Minneapolis Arts District...

Then off to a nearby park for a little mini-picnic! A break from all that hard work, a little orange cream soda toast to the future Mr. & Mrs.

And since we are in Minnesota and these guys are huge Twins fans... an obligatory shot with the twins jerseys against the Minneapolis skyline. Gretchen & Dan you guys were too fun... thanks for being such good sports and for looking so in love! We cannot wait until the big day!

Jason and I had such a blast shooting a wedding on the Magnolia Blossom paddleboat in St. Paul www.magnoliablossom.net. Nobody was going to let the rain hamper any fun. Yes, you are seeing this correctly, I'm talking about fall family photos. WHAT? I know, it sounds kinda crazy to be talking about fall... I mean, we've just barely started barbequing and hauling out the inflatable pools and lawn furniture. Technically, it isn't even officially summer yet... Anywho... I'm looking at my calendar and noticing that Joy Orcutt Photography is almost full for the month of October already!! I have Sunday, October 3rd at 10am and Sunday, October 17th at 10am and 3pm. This is PRIME TIME for the peak of fall colors. I also have a couple of weekday openings but for the most part... its booking up fast!!!! That is really exciting for Jason and I. So, if you are a blog reader and toying around with the idea of booking a session for your family for the fall, PLEASE don't wait until Labor Day rolls around because it would bum me out big time if I didn't have any times available.

I get excited thinking about fall family photos just looking at this marvelous family in those glorious orange and gold leaves!! But... I can wait just a little while, I still have plenty of sprinklers to run through, ice cream trucks to chase and of course, the State Fair has not yet come. Happy Summer!!

Does anybody else ever take those coasters on the table when you go out to eat? Well, I shamelessly do! I have found several uses for them but in particular, I like to use them for mini scrapbooks for photos. I needed teacher gifts to give our preschool teachers and this was just the thing! The round ones I had gotten from a hotel a while back. You know, they are hiding behind that packet of coffee no one ever seems to use in the hotel room.

I happened to know that one of the preschool teachers has a new little grandbaby on the way... Hope she uses this for some cute snaps of the new baby.

Here is another sneak peek from last Saturday's sessions at the NE Minneapolis studio. This is little Emery's first birthday portraits. Her mom came equipped with the whole nine yards for the photos, balloons, a tutu, cupcakes, a personalized party hat, all of which she made, well, except for the balloons, of course!

I was pretty warmed up after already completing one-year-old birthday portraits earlier that morning. At Emery's session I even had a little assistant with me, she did a great job.

I met up with these lovebirds at Como Park, a place where the lovely bride spent much time as a kid. In fact, she grew up across the lake from the pavillion at Como Park. We made sure to capture that pavilion and its familiarity in our photos. We laughed the whole time. These two are seriously like teenagers. But they know that. They've been told a lot.
Jason and I cannot wait to photograph this wedding, we hear there will be lots more laughing and whooping it up, oh yeah and did I mention these nuptials will be on a boat out on the mighty Mississip??? I think we're gonna rock that boat!

I really wanted for Mother's Day, to have photos taken with me and my girls. I spend so much time photographing other families and you would think that I have a TON of photos myself, of my own kids. I do have a lot of pictures of my kids but not with me in them. This was my Mother's Day wish. I did get my pictures but of course, much like life, it didn't happen quite exactly as how I planned...

You see, first of all my photo shoot had to happen a week after Mother's Day, because we were sick in our household, no biggie. Then, I don't think I accounted for just how much time it would take to get THREE girls ready, with THREE dresses, THREE heads of hair to do, THREE faces to keep clean... you get the idea.

There happened to be an art fair occuring in and around our studio building, (it IS the arts district of NE Minneapolis afterall...) so that was a HUGE distraction to my girls getting directly into the building without any tantrums over balloons they might have seen or any trucks that may or may not have had cotton candy or other tasty treats.

We also had to set up our shoot, me carrying light stands, a fan, a toddler with only a diaper on... with rollers still in my hair. We must have been a sight.

Whew, I am exhausted just typing this.

At any rate, I got my photos with my little belles, thank goodness Jason had patience for us and our fussing. I would highly recommend a mother & daughter photo session. hmmm... maybe a good idea for mini sessions next year!

Happy Mother's Day!

This Mother's Day post is late, but it is actually a little representative of the one of the fundamentals of motherhood; putting everything else first. This mother's day Jason and I had bad colds, we say we will celebrate next weekend! I had plans to have photos taken of myself and my girls, something that rarely happens. But those plans were thwarted by our cold bugs. I found this picture of myself with my older daughter. Jason snapped this photo after a long day of photo sessions. He and the girls met me at the studio and I was a little irritated to have someone taking a picture of me, I felt sweaty, tired, cranky and altogether disheveled. But I'm glad he did, I like this picture a lot. She is older now but is still my baby. I guess no matter how old our kids get, they will always still be our babies and as mothers, we will continue to always put them first.
I hope it was a good one for all moms out there!

This lovely little lady did such a wonderful job at her newborn session. She is 5 weeks old, slept a little during our session...

Gee, I would say she was pretty much one of the easiest newborns to photograph!

Are you a 2010 senior that has not yet completed your senior photos?? Never fear- spring senior portraits are here! Okay, that was a little dramatic. But seriously, its not too late. "R's" mom called Joy Orcutt Photography last week inquiring about senior photos and wondering if it was too late. We tweaked our schedule a little and worked them in. I'm so glad we did, her pics are looking fabulous. We were talking about taking photos in the spring and it got me to thinking about how nice spring is for photos. The scenery has a lighter, muted tone. There is much more light available with only buds on trees. This first shot to me exemplifies my satisfaction with this spring photo shoot:

Minneapolis Senior Photographer | Looking back and moving forward

Just a quick post about a few of my clients from last year. All of my seniors have been so great to work with. The future is just begining for these rockin seniors and I am sure they will all do great things.

The class of 2010 is almost gone and the class of 2011 is looking to rock things this summer. We have spent all winter waiting and preparing for our 2011 seniors, new places to shoot, new studio and new ideas! Lets get together and show them how the class of 2011 does it!

Nothing could make me happier than when clients continue to come to me to mark the milestones in their lives. Little "M" is turning 1. That is such a big deal. I know, when my kids turned one, it was such a celebration both for my husband and I. It might just be THE most monumental birthday for mom and dad. That first year can be such a rollercoaster. This mom and dad are going to be so glad years from now, that they made sure to get custom photos of their little peanut when she turned one.
Mom was so prepared too, with the birthday hat and tutu...

Such a pretty girl!

And after we played around with some of the accessories in my dress-up trunk at the studio...

I can't resist putting a big flower on the top of a cute little girl!

I love the sparkles in their eyes in this photo. These happen to be cousins who came in to the studio for some photos.
Most of the time, my favorite shots are the ones I take while getting set up, getting situated or while testing my light. I love the piggies, love the ones painted blue here too...
I love the combination of blues and greens, it works so well here.

Look at ALL those baby blues here... So precious. Thank you for coming to my studio, we had fun and the kids were waaaaay too easy to photograph!!

Lately my Saturdays at the NE Minneapolis studio have been completely full and this past Saturday was no exception. Here are just a few images from the fun world of a Minneapolis Children's Photographer...

awww... these clients have returned to me several times to capture their milestones. They are growing like weeds! It seems like just yesterday I was photographing little miss "A" in her 1-year-old birthday hat.

We also had new clients to Joy Orcutt Photography... Mr. "H" and his mommy.

This lovely duo was referred by another client I photographed later in the afternoon...

Yay! there's a genuine boy smile! (well, anyone would laugh when they hear me try to make animal sounds!)

...AND... Hello again "W" family! The last time we got together for photos I captured this little man in a bucket carried by his mom and dad... still one of my favorites.

He was so cute carrying around his blankie, blankies are special.

Not sure who was having more fun running around the studio and playing peekaboo, child or dad??

Its such a rarity... to see these two 2-year-old feet stopping to take a break.
I just love these shoes and I know it won't be long until they are dirty and muddy... spring is on the way! These were taken at the Minneapolis studio. A big part of children's photography is capturing their little details.

Its been waaaaay long since I last photographed these little dudes. I don't know why they were so shy at first, I know their mom quite well.

But that's cool, custom photography allows for time to relax, get used to the surroundings. I took some time to just capture their little boy feet, and the lizard on J's shirt! Hey, I'm no dummy... I know kids really don't want to sit and be posed and say "cheese" a billion times, so I had mom make sure to bring about a billion and one Matchbox cars.

We spread them out and out came the big, wide, genuine kid smiles.

This lovely family came to the Minneapolis studio for some spring photos. We needed to capture Little "B's" six month old baby pictures. We also needed to get 3 year old photos for miss "K" who is having a birthday real soon. Their mom brought the most adorable outfits, a dream for a children's photographer. I've always got creativity flowing through my brain and so I'm always thinking of fresh, fun elements to add to children's photography. This idea of ties on baby onesies have been floating around the blog world for awhile so I had to try it out. Sure, it took me an hour or so to actually set up my sewing machine and figure out how it works again!! But I think they turned out fun and cute. I sure hope someone wants to try this out, perhaps for their baby's first birthday photos... or six month baby photos. More fresh, fun elements to come...

I don't know why carnations get a bad rap. I've heard a lot of people say they are not their favorite or they just can't stand them. I love carnations. I love that they are so fluffy, voluminous, they remind me of tissue paper pom poms. I also love them because they are so fragrant. Another reason to love carnations... they last for a long time. Anyway, instead of taking a picture of my whole vase of carnations I thought I would showcase just one stem.

I have photographed these treasured clients of mine several times now. Mom came shining through again with a beautiful scheme of outfit colors. They always look like models from the Childrens Place. This is what family photography is all about.

... and doing whatever I gotta do to get the kids to smile genuine smiles!! not sure what maneuver I was doing but it got little miss "K" to throw her hands up!!
